scrubs.pngA lot of people — fans included — wonder how Scrubs has managed to get to an eighth season. After all, things weren’t breaking its way at the end of what was supposed to be its seventh and final season: the writers’ strike truncated the season, its network (NBC) no longer wanted the show, and, though the writing quality had picked up by the time the seventh season was cut short, it had declined enough that even the show’s most ardent fans were wondering if it was time to put the show out of its misery.

But thanks to the efforts of Bill Lawrence and ABC Studios, Scrubs does live on, this time on ABC. And, after viewing the first two episodes of the new season, I’m happy to say that going to an eighth season was worth it. Lawrence told me that he wanted to get back to the humor and storytelling basics of the early seasons, and the episodes I saw show evidence of that.

Rest of the story is undercut as its filled with spoilers for the first two episodes

352.pngSo, in between watching election coverage over the last couple of days, I slipped in DVDs of the first two episodes of the new ABC incarnation of “Scrubs,” which will debut at some point in early 2009.And they’re terrific.
In particular, the second one — a spiritual sequel to season one’s “My Old Lady,” guest-starring Glynn Turman (Mayor Royce from “The Wire,” and/or Blair Underwood’s dad on “In Treatment”) as a terminally-ill patient — is already one of my five favorite “Scrubs” episodes ever, just the right mix of pathos and weird comedy.

Bill Lawrence promised that he was going to dial back on the wackiness, and he has. JD is still weird, but he’s also recognizably human again. And the new intern characters — notably Aziz Ansari from “Human Giant” and Eliza Coupe — fit in very well. I think I’d rather see the show go out on a high note, ala “Frasier” or “Cheers” (both of which rebounded in their last years after some weak later seasons), than to attempt to continue a year from now as “Scrubs: The Next Generation,” but if the ratings are decent enough to allow that, at least it looks like the creative team has rediscovered what made the show great in the first place.

Not trying to be a tease; just trying to remind everybody that “Scrubs” is still here, and that the new stuff is going to be worth waiting for.

666666666.pngI think I recently read that ABC might bring Scrubs on earlier than we expected. Maybe before Christmas? I know you’ve got the hook up at Sacred Heart, so is it true? -Bill
I don’t know if I’ve got the “hook up,” Bill, but I can tell you that I’ve heard this rumor is false. Seems ABC will wait till midseason, as they originally planned, because they want sufficient time to promote Scrubs properly before its premiere. But if you’re dying for some all-new Sacred Heart action, you’ll delight in the upcoming webisodes, which should debut in the next couple months.
