352.pngSo, in between watching election coverage over the last couple of days, I slipped in DVDs of the first two episodes of the new ABC incarnation of “Scrubs,” which will debut at some point in early 2009.And they’re terrific.
In particular, the second one — a spiritual sequel to season one’s “My Old Lady,” guest-starring Glynn Turman (Mayor Royce from “The Wire,” and/or Blair Underwood’s dad on “In Treatment”) as a terminally-ill patient — is already one of my five favorite “Scrubs” episodes ever, just the right mix of pathos and weird comedy.

Bill Lawrence promised that he was going to dial back on the wackiness, and he has. JD is still weird, but he’s also recognizably human again. And the new intern characters — notably Aziz Ansari from “Human Giant” and Eliza Coupe — fit in very well. I think I’d rather see the show go out on a high note, ala “Frasier” or “Cheers” (both of which rebounded in their last years after some weak later seasons), than to attempt to continue a year from now as “Scrubs: The Next Generation,” but if the ratings are decent enough to allow that, at least it looks like the creative team has rediscovered what made the show great in the first place.

Not trying to be a tease; just trying to remind everybody that “Scrubs” is still here, and that the new stuff is going to be worth waiting for.

Bill Lawrence time from time visits the NBC scrubs board and left the following messages for fans:

Hey, Not really attached to anything NBC related anymore, though I appreciate everyone’s work on this site, as well as the interest of all posters. I’ll turn up on an ABC site soon. Hopefully some of you will follow - I owe a lot of answers to questions. Thanks again,
Also, not anyone’s fault (my falling out with NBC) here, so if there’s anything you’d like me to do (answer questions, dance jigs, etc.) please respond here. Also again (I’m a sad person who can’t let go), I will indeed print out all the questions on the “questions” thread and answer them. That’s it. Really. I’m sad and lonely…

Here’s an interview with Christa and Bill you can Read the whole interview here

Is it harder to say serious medical stuff than funny medical stuff?

Christa Miller: “Yeah, it’s much harder. It gets jumbled up on your tongue. I’m not used to saying things that…”

Bill Lawrence: “Are you saying that it’s easy doing Scrubs?”

Christa Miller: “No, it’s much harder doing comedy.”

Bill Lawrence: “That’s what I thought you were going to say.”

Christa Miller: “But it’s harder doing words that my husband doesn’t write for me.”

Bill Lawrence: “Although you know the guy that wrote this won the Pulitzer Prize. Trying to give me props, it’s like, ‘The last thing I wanted to do is read the words of a Pulitzer prize winner.’”

Christa Miller: “My husband just has a boy crush on Robert Schenkkan, the writer.”

they’re calling this the Scrubs finale. That’s not the final finale, is it?

Christa Miller: “No, we’re still shooting. I don’t think I’m allowed to say anything more than that but I’m working next week, if that means anything.”

How does it feel to be back?

Christa Miller: “So fun. It’s great to be back and also it’s great to feel that we’re not just going to be ending.”

Bill, if you want to jump back in, this isn’t the final finale?

Bill Lawrence: “I wouldn’t think so, because I came straight from work.”
